Waitrose Partner Phoebe has been recognised as a runner-up in the nationwide Uniform Hero campaign, which celebrates individuals who wear their work uniforms with pride and embody the spirit of their community.
The Uniform Hero campaign was launched to shine a light on the people behind the uniforms. While there are awareness days for everything from school uniforms to “non-uniform days,” there had never been a moment dedicated to celebrating the people who put on a uniform to go to work every day.
Over the past 12 months, the campaign has gathered more than 300 stories from across the UK, highlighting how wearing a uniform can inspire confidence, create community, and represent achievement. From these entries, just four winners and four runners-up were chosen, placing Phoebe among the top eight.
“Uniforms carry meaning far beyond the clothes themselves,” explained Judy Toberty, one of the campaign organisers. “They represent achievement, pride, and community. Phoebe’s entry stood out for the heartfelt way she described her role, her team, and the impact she has on those around her.”
Phoebe joined Waitrose at just 17 years old, taking on her first retail role. In two years, she has progressed to team leader, a step that has helped her grow in confidence and shape her career path.
“What struck me most about Waitrose from the start was the people,” Phoebe said. “I’ve had incredible mentors, and I’ve grown so much here. Our branch has a real sense of community, not just among colleagues, but with our customers too.”
For Phoebe, her uniform plays a central role in that connection:
“Wearing the uniform is a big source of pride. It reminds me that I’m part of something bigger, part of the community we serve. Customers recognise us straight away, and that creates relationships, especially with our regulars. My name badge makes conversations personal, and those little chats can brighten someone’s day.”
Phoebe’s recognition has also been celebrated by colleagues. Her Partner Operations Manager, Stefan, described her as “a key partner in the branch.”
“I’ve watched Phoebe go from strength to strength,” he said. “She’s someone I can always rely on to take initiative, to get others involved, and to bring positivity into everything she does. When we shared the news that she was a runner-up, other partners immediately said how proud they were, she really represents what being a Waitrose Partner is all about.”
As part of her runner-up prize, Phoebe received a special box of goodies. “It was such a lovely surprise,” she said. “It gave me an extra sense of pride, knowing I’d done something good, and of course, I shared the chocolates around with my colleagues!”
The Uniform Hero campaign will continue to spotlight the untold stories of those who proudly wear their uniforms every day, whether for service, identity, or community. Phoebe’s story stands as a reminder of the people behind the uniform, and the lasting impact they make.
